It's not every night that a Philip Glass documentary is aired on national TV. So, please tune in tonight at 9:00PM in most areas to catch GLASS: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts on PBS. I had a friend call from Dallas last night as he noticed it in his TV program guide.
The world's greatest champion of Philip Glass, Dennis Russell Davies is bringing his orchestra, the Bruckner Orchester Linz, back to the United States in November for a tour which includes Glass repertoire. The orchestra's last US tour was in 2005 during which they premiered the great Glass Symphony No.8 on the first part of a program paired with Symphony No.6 on the second half.
The orchestra has been playing dates all over Europe the past 4 years which has included additional performances of the Eighth and the Violin Concerto.
This November, Davies bring the Glass Violin Concerto to New York (Nov.9), the Violin Concerto in Wake Forest NC (Nov. 10), and the Violin Concerto along with Symphony No.7 "Toltec" in Chapel Hill, NC (Nov.11) and they wrap up the tour with three performances of the new Glass opera Kepler at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (Nov. 18, 20 and 21).
In a related note, Dennis Russell Davies recently released this recording of the completed Ninth Symphony of Schnittke now available on iTunes.
