interesting story on Glass & the Nonesuch label--

Marvin Cohodas

Love the Planctus. Thanks!

Love both of these pieces, but they do suggest to me that Glass isn't the best performer of his own solo piano work. Of course, the fact that you're hearning and seeing the composer playing his own music has its own kind of magic.

Proman

Once again, I have to disagree. I have never seen or heard anyone peforms Glass's music better than Glass himself (and I say this as someone who was both priviliged to see him play in person and owns a dozen of CDs of his piano music performed by other players).

I am being objective. No one comes close. While many of them have great technique they don't quite understand the correct tempo in which this pieces should be played. Magic, and even technique aside, I just LOVE the way Glass speeds up and slows down, and puts accents in his works. Nobody else does it quite the same way.

P.S. As far as I know neither Michael Riesman nor Paul Barnes ever recorded their version of, say, Metamorphosis. I really admire them and have no doubt that their renditions would be excellent though.

Willo the Wisp

No, you're being subjective, like I was.

Anyway, I certainly agree that nobody does it quite the same way - you got that right!

Proman

Haha :) . By the way Wilo, could you please name one pianist whose interoretation of Glass's work you like? I'm really curious.

Willo the Wisp

Michael Riesman. not just a great pianist, but a marvellous arranger and orchestrator.

Dan Johnson

Ooh, I've always loved Planctus. Silly question maybe, but any word if it'll ever get a commercial release?
